Size

The size of the membership of a medical aid can be important in that poor risk is better cross subsidised in a larger medical scheme than in a smaller one. In the past it was felt that a larger medical aid scheme was more sustainable than a smaller fund, however, we have since seen that some of the smaller funds can more easily adjust to the challenges legislation and market changes throw at them. In our opinion, size still plays an important role in determining the sustainability of a medical scheme, but it does not have the same weighting as in the past. Fivaz Brokers follows the movement of their membership more closely instead of purely looking at the size in terms of numbers of members.
